yoga for painters
Tuesday, May 18, 2010 Whew! This last weekend was filled with painting, painting, and more painting. I used to be so excited to paint a room...and right now I cringe at the thought!
We are finishing up some home improvement projects and I spent the weekend painting our new master suite. It is huge, newly drywalled, and has lots of nooks and crannies. I had to prime walls and ceiling and paint walls and ceiling. Have you ever painted a ceiling? It is miserable. And, I'm super short so it takes me an extra long time. Paint, paint, move the ladder!
But, the room is going to be beautiful. A nice little retreat from the world and a nice spot to practice yoga in the morning sunlight! And, I am definitely in need of some painter's yoga!
Painting Yoga
- Tadasana: watch the weight on the feet and be mindful to not stand funky while you are furiously rolling paint onto the walls! Building awareness and bringing some yogic attention to our new space!
- Malasana: I found that the yogic squat was a great pose for painting low on the wall. Nice little hip stretch and some relief for the low back.
- Full Yogic Breath: just keep bringing that breath to the belly. No matter how big the space looks and how overwhelming it feels, just breathe through it. It will get done.
- Rag Doll: uttanasana with bent knees and torso on the thighs, arms hanging, head hanging. This feels so good while painting the ceiling.
- Chest Opener: while the heart center is nice and open while painting the ceiling, it doesn't get much opening while painting walls and trim. Find a nice tadasana, bring arms behind the back and interlace the fingers, open the heart center.
- Bhaktasana: during a break from painting, take devotional pose to release the shoulders and get a nice stretch.
- Down Dog: nice wide fingers to stretch out the hands (apparently I hold onto the roller with a death grip!), press out of the shoulders.
- Chest Opener w/ Bolster: place the bolster at the sacrum and lay back, let the body soften, and receive the sweetness of yoga.

Painting a ceiling is the WORST! Last fall we painted my enclosed porch, and we had to use exterior, oil-based primer. Me being the smart person that I am, I didn't realize that meant it could only be removed with paint thinner, until I already had it all over my face!! I had to put PAINT THINNER on my face to get it all off.
I felt like I might die.
Hope the rest of your painting goes well! Roll those shoulders and keep the end product in mind! : )
I love that even amidst the hard work your mind still turns to yoga. Now that's an integrated practice!!
Can't wait for pics of the new suite and yoga space!

Oh, honey, I feel your pain! As you know, we just "finished" our kitchen and bath. However, I HAVE NOT yet painted my bathroom ceiling. After drywalling/priming/painting the kitchen, I was done. Some day! Thanks for the sequence!
Loved this post! My mom and I just helped my sister paint her condo, and I can so relate. We painted ceilings, nooks and crannies, closets -- what is really a tiny one bedroom felt like a mansion halfway through that project. But it was all worth it!
I really like your blog - I made it over here via The Joy of Yoga (thanks, Emma) :)
