sharanam (and give away)

Sharon Gannon of Jivamukti yoga has a cd out:  Sharanam.  I know nothing about Jivamukti yoga, but I am very aware of Sharon's name.  And, I find it very cool that yoga people make yoga cds.  I'm always searching for new and interesting music for my classes.

Now, I've never written a music review before.  I'm not really a musically inclined person.  And, while in some classes, music is an absolute necessity (to cover gym noises like grunting and dropping weights, and to cover the sounds of the crying kids in the daycare right next to the yoga room) I also like to skip the music when I know it will be quiet enough.

I popped Sharon's cd in at my house and began to listen and thought, "um, this isn't gonna work for me."  Her voice is really high and there is a lot of spacey effects in the music (i seriously expected to see some ufos).  Some very unexpected elements that I find distracting in a yoga practice.  Ugh.

That was the first listen.

For the second listen I actually practiced to the music and found that music transformed slightly for me.  It led me to a very flowy and yummy practice and I was not on the look out for aliens at all.

For the third listen I brought the album to the yoga studio...which is where it was meant to be played.  It did what I seek to do in my classes, transformed the studio into a special spot where one could escape.  It had an ethereal effect and I found it to be very, very sweet.  There is some music that I use in practice that I just can't listen to in any other environment because it is so special.

I'm giving you the chance to see what you think of Sharon's new album.  Just leave a comment for a chance to win Sharanam.  I'll gladly ship anywhere (and cross my fingers that it gets to you!).  Winner will be chosen by Random.org on Sunday.

I've never really been one for either practicing or teaching to music but I'm always happy to rethink that!

I hear you (ahahaha, so punny). :P But I do, I'm partial to deeper, more sultry voices.

thanks for the review! i've heard about the CD and am always on the lookout for new music. i find making playlists a stressful part of teaching because i never know if my students will respond to the music the same way i do or if they are in fact "on the lookout for aliens". hahaha. crossing my fingers for a chance to win. thanks for hosting!

Sure, why not! I love new music.

I laughed so hard at the "aliens" comment... I also get a bit irked with some of the ultra-new-age-spacey music out there. I prefer earthy tones myself, but whatever...

Yes! Do play this in your yoga class or during your personal practice. I loved it at first listen, tough as the post explains perhaps it will take a couple listens to experience the full power
