kulae
Monday, February 14, 2011 I recently got my paws on two new Kulae yoga mats. I've been using one and I gave one away during our Yoga Feast on Saturday. The winner absolutely LOVES hers.
I've been using the mat for two weeks now. I'm a firm believer that you can't really review a mat until you have used it and used it some more. It would probably be more appropriate to use it for a month or so. My list of pros and cons:
Pros:
- simply beautiful. it has very rich color. each side is a different color.
- texture. each side has a different "grippy" texture that feels neat under the hands and feet.
- cushy. this mat has a lot of cushion. i practice on a super hard floor and it has kept the joints from aching.
- light. it is super light, but still thick. it will be easy to carry around on my bike this summer (i'm a fair weather biker...)
- company is focussed on community. when kulae asked me to review a mat, i did some research on the company. they have a very strong focus on building community, which is very important to me. seeing that...i asked kulae to be a montana sangha supporter and they agreed! (don't worry, this review is very honest).
Cons:
- the mat is light. i know i listed it as a pro, but when practicing it is so light it slips around. or if you can't quite get your leg up or back from a lunge, you'll drag the mat with you.
- slippery. i've been using this one for two weeks. i've washed off the film that is there when you first get a mat. but, when my feet sweat or my hands, i definitely slide a bit.
- seems like it won't last long. which doesn't mean that it will fall apart instantly. but, i would guess after three years of hard use it will start to give up.
And now for the tricky part. Kulae claims to be an eco company with the tagline "Karma's Real". They tout the eco-ness of their mats. I read it. Sounds good to me. But, I have no idea what I read. So, I called in some reinforcement on that front. Eco Yogini has the green review on the mat. Thank you for helping me out with that part. Way over my head...

sigh- they ARE pretty aren't they? Environmental stuff shouldn't mean we all have to be chemists. :)
